Alan Vinegrad, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Joins Covington as a Partner

December 23, 2002 - NEW YORK, NY - International business law firm Covington & Burling announced today that Alan Vinegrad will join the firm as a partner. Mr. Vinegrad completed a 15-month tenure in September 2002 as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. In that role, he had responsibility for overseeing the federal criminal and civil cases in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Nassau and Suffolk Counties on behalf of the United States.

Most recently, Mr. Vinegrad personally led the criminal prosecutions arising out of the assault of Abner Louima by members of the New York City Police Department's 70th Precinct in Brooklyn. He participated as well in the prosecution of the men responsible for the death of Yankel Rosenbaum during the onset of the 1991 riots in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Mr. Vinegrad has also held several other executive and supervisory roles at the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York, including Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney, Chief of the Criminal Division, Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division, Chief of Civil Rights Litigation and Chief of General Crimes.

Mr. Vinegrad will reside in the firm's New York office and joins the firm's White Collar Defense Practice effective January 21, 2003.

Covington's white collar defense practice in New York and across the firm continues to face a growing demand for expertise to handle internal investigations, criminal fraud investigations and regulatory enforcement matters. Recently, Covington has expanded its white collar criminal defense practice with the additions of former Deputy Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr. as a partner in its Washington, D.C. office and John M. Potter as a partner in its San Francisco office. Other members of the firm's white collar practice include Aaron R. Marcu, former Associate U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Bruce A. Baird, former Chief of the Southern District's Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force, and Lanny A. Breuer, former Special Counsel to President Bill Clinton.

Mr. Vinegrad stated, "I'm excited and honored to be joining Covington. This is a firm of exceptionally talented lawyers and a first-rate, nationwide white collar criminal defense practice."

Mr. Vinegrad received his J.D. from New York University School of Law in 1984 and a B.S. in Economics from The Wharton School of Business in 1980. Following law school, he served as a law clerk for the Honorable Leonard B. Sand of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
