Covington Advises BUPA in Acquisition of Latin American and Caribbean Businesses

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 19, 2005 -  Covington & Burling advised British United Provident Association (BUPA) in its acquisition of AMEDEX Insurance Company, a US-based insurer with headquarters in Miami and operations throughout  Latin America and the Caribbean.  AMEDEX insures over 100,000 people in 42 countries.  The terms of the transaction, which closed on September 9th, have not been publicly disclosed.

The Covington team included partners Rubén Kraiem and Bruce Wilson and special counsel Christian Neira.  Other members of the team included Heather G. Haberl (real estate), Robert Heller (tax), Douglas E. Phillips (intellectual property), Seth Safra (benefits) and Gary Vinokur (corporate), with assistance from Paul Roethel of our finance staff on funds flow and closing logistics.  Covington coordinated and oversaw the efforts of local counsel in Florida, and of foreign counsel in several Latin American and Caribbean jurisdictions.
