Peter Hutt & Peter Safir Recognized in Legal Times Profile of Top Food & Drug Lawyers

September 22, 2005

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 22, 2005 - Covington & Burling lawyers Peter Barton Hutt and Peter Safir were featured as two of Washington's top eleven Leading Food & Drug Lawyers in this week's edition of Legal Times.  Covington was the only firm to have two lawyers recognized.

In describing Mr. Hutt's reputation as a standout in the field, the Legal Times observed  that he "has done it all" and "is renowned for the breadth and depth of his expertise in virtually every area of food and drug law."  Hutt, a former chief counsel of the Food and Drug Administration, is viewed by many as "the dean of the food-and-drug bar," according to the Legal Times.

Mr. Safir was singled out for his work for top pharmaceutical companies on issues related to advertising and marketing practices, intellectual property rights and life-cycle management, and  manufacturing quality and product safety.  According to Legal Times, "Peter Safir's client list is a veritable who's who of pharmaceutical companies."  In the Legal Times account, he was praised by pharmaceutical industry general counsels for his "incredible judgment" in helping clients make "very difficult decisions" and "navigat[ing] through legal issues in ways that are most successful for the company," qualities aided by the extent to which he "understands the business."

Covington's extensive food & drug practice, which began at the firm's founding in 1919, includes what the Legal Times called "a cast of all-star attorneys" in addition to Hutt and Safir, including Richard Kingham, Ellen Flannery, Eugene Lambert, and Richard Merrill.  The practice includes representation before the FDA, Federal Trade Commission, and United States Department of Agriculture, and litigation at all levels in the federal courts.  Covington was ranked as the number one life sciences regulatory law firm worldwide and the best U.S. law firm overall that advises the life sciences sector by Global Counsel magazine in the November 2004 issue.  The practice also received top ranking from Chambers USA 2005 in the "Healthcare: Pharmaceutical/Medical Products Regulatory" category.
