Covington Adds David Goodwin and Lawrence Hobel to its Premier Policyholder Coverage Practice

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, July 1, 2008 — Covington & Burling LLP is pleased to announce that David Goodwin and Lawrence Hobel have joined the firm’s policyholder insurance coverage practice as partners. Both will be resident in Covington’s San Francisco office.

Mr. Goodwin is one of the nation’s leading insurance coverage practitioners, placed in the first rank by Chambers USA both nationally and in California. With more than 20 years of experience representing corporate policyholders in coverage disputes and litigation, his practice runs the gamut of insurance issues, from major property damage and business interruption losses, to errors and omissions and directors and officers claims, to mortgage and financial guarantee insurance disputes, to products liability and environmental matters. He is also a highly experienced appellate advocate. Mr. Goodwin was a long-time partner of a major San Francisco firm.

Mr. Hobel is also a highly accomplished senior policyholder coverage litigator, who in addition advises on and litigates complex environmental matters. He has served as lead counsel in numerous major coverage actions, and has secured hundreds of millions of dollars in insurance recoveries for extraordinary first party and third party losses. His environmental practice spans toxics, air, water, natural resources, land use and climate control. He is ranked both nationally and in California by Chambers USA, and for many years was a partner at a major San Francisco firm.

Timothy Hester, chair of Covington’s management committee, commented: “With the addition of David and Larry, Covington achieves two very significant objectives. Our growing San Francisco office gets an important boost from these highly regarded and talented partners, and our preeminent international policyholder coverage practice now has a team in California that is second to none.”

Covington has long maintained one of the nation’s leading policyholder insurance coverage practices. In 2007, Covington received the Chambers Award for Excellence in Insurance, the first law firm on the insurance company or policyholder side to be so honored. The firm already has a strong presence in California, with more than 25 litigation lawyers, half of whom handle insurance coverage litigation, complementing the national and international reach of our practitioners on the East Coast and in London.

“This is an extraordinary opportunity to join Covington, a firm I have long admired, and to work with fellow insurance practitioner Don Brown and others in building the firm’s presence in California,” said Mr. Hobel.

Mr. Goodwin added, “Covington has the best insurance recovery practice in the country, and I am excited about having the opportunity to join the team.”

To date, Covington's insurance practice has helped its policyholder clients recover well in excess of $10 billion. These recoveries have involved a wide variety of claims and losses, including mass-tort liabilities, property and business interruption losses, and directors and officers liability exposures.
