Covington’s International Trade Practice Wins Chambers Award for Excellence

WASHINGTON, DC, June 10, 2011 — In presenting Covington & Burling LLP with the Chambers USA Award for Excellence in International Trade on June 9th, Chambers noted how the firm’s “comprehensive team covers the complete spectrum of international trade matters and clients benefit from the close-knit and interdisciplinary approach of the department's various subgroups.”

The award, presented at a gala dinner in New York, coincided with the release of the Chambers USA 2011 guidebook. Covington’s “impressive tally of ranked partners is testament to its dedication to and excellence in this field,” Chambers wrote in the guidebook.  The firm’s practice is chaired by Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat, and co-chaired by Ambassador John Veroneau, the former deputy United States trade representative, and Peter Lichtenbaum, a former senior ranking official at the Commerce Department.

“It is an honor to be recognized by Chambers for our efforts in assisting our clients to meet their global business strategies,” Mr. Veroneau said.  “We take great pride in helping our clients navigate a wide array of legal regimes around the world.”

In addition to receiving the Award for Excellence in International Trade, Covington’s international trade practice took top honors in the Chambers USA 2011 guidebook, which gave Covington a top-tier ranking nationwide.  Additionally, nine of the firm’s international lawyers were ranked nationwide individually for their work in international trade areas including, Maureen Browne and Sturgis Sobin (Intellectual Property), Stuart Eizenstat and Mr. Veroneau (Trade Remedies & Trade Policy), David Fagan and Mark Plotkin (CFIUS Experts), Peter Flanagan and Peter Trooboff (Export Controls & Economic Sanctions), and Tom Johnson (FCPA Experts).

The firm’s international lawyers have assisted numerous private companies and governmental entities in successfully navigating the trade laws of the United States and other countries. The international trade practice has been recognized by Chambers for several years.  The group advises on international trade compliance and market access issues, including export controls, economic sanctions, national security reviews of foreign investments, anti-corruption laws, market access, and international trade disputes. The firm’s Chambers-ranked presence in Beijing enables us to provide expert and specialized assistance to clients doing business in and from the United States, Europe and Asia.
