Covington Named to National Law Journal’s “IP Hot List”

June 3, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC, June 3, 2014 — The National Law Journal has named Covington & Burling to its 2014 “Intellectual Property Hot List,” which recognizes 20 firms that have “become leaders on the latest trends in intellectual property law.” This is the second time since 2012 that Covington has been named to the list.

In naming Covington to the list, the NLJ cited the firm’s intellectual property litigation in federal courts around the country and at the International Trade Commission. The publication highlighted the firm’s successful representation for Spirits International B.V. over the U.S. trademark rights of Stolichnaya vodka; a jury verdict finding Quiksilver Inc. willfully infringed World Marketing Inc.'s "VISITOR" trademark; the firm’s representation of AOL Inc., in three lawsuits involving targeted Web advertising; an arbitration agreement for Huawei Technologies Co. following a favorable trial result at the International Trade Commission; and a settlement for Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc. in litigation against Lupin Pharmaceuticals Inc., which preserved more than $1 billion in sales for Janssen.

In an interview with the NLJ, Covington partner George Pappas noted the firm’s broadening range of IP work, emphasizing that the firm’s intellectual property practice has “grown horizontally” enabling Covington to handle the entire range of patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secrets issues.

Covington’s IP practice, which includes more than 180 lawyers worldwide, has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America, Chambers USA, Chambers Global, IP Law and Business, The Legal 500, and The Practical Law Company.
