Prominent Financial Services Lawyer Joining Covington

July 1, 2019

WASHINGTONJeremy Newell has joined Covington's Financial Services Group as a partner in Washington. Mr. Newell's arrival follows the recent addition of Karen Solomon, who joined Covington after serving as the acting Chief Counsel of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.

Mr. Newell was formerly Executive Vice President, General Counsel & Chief Operating Officer at the Bank Policy Institute, where he was responsible for overseeing BPI's legal affairs, regulatory advocacy and strategy, and regulatory relationships, as well as its operations, human resources, and finance. In addition to the day-to-day legal, advocacy, and operations work of the trade organization, Mr. Newell helped develop the overall strategic vision and approach of the trade association to regulatory advocacy. Mr. Newell formerly worked at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington DC, in both the Division of Supervision and Regulation and the Legal Division. He also advised clients in private practice and as in-house counsel to two prominent financial institutions, one based in the United States and one based in the European Union.

Mr. Newell is a leading authority on the supervision of large U.S. and non-U.S. banks, including international capital and liquidity standards, stress testing, and enhanced prudential standards. He is also a recognized thought leader with respect to the regulatory regime administered by the Federal Reserve for bank holding companies, including control determinations in the context of acquisitions, investments, and partnerships.

"Jeremy's former position at BPI and prior positions at other organizations, including the Federal Reserve, have given him a unique blend of regulatory and policy expertise on cutting edge and high-profile banking issues that will benefit our clients," said Michael Nonaka, co-chair of Covington's Financial Services Group. "His extensive experience on a wide range of regulatory issues will enable him to contribute immediately in advising the firm's financial services clients, including large and small banks, fintech companies, and technology companies and commercial companies that are affected by financial services requirements." "I look forward to joining Covington, which has a top-notch financial services practice and is well-known for its collaborative culture and its strong legacy at the center of regulatory policy in Washington," said Mr. Newell. "I am looking forward to working with my colleagues and leveraging my past experience to expand the firm's work across a number of different practice areas that touch upon financial services."

Mr. Newell graduated from Yale Law School and received his undergraduate degree from Union College.
