October 13, 2020

WASHINGTON—Covington has promoted Ichiro (“Ike”) Morinaga to Senior Of Counsel. Mr. Morinaga heads Covington’s Japan practice and leads the firm’s relationships with a range of Japanese corporations as well as trade associations and governmental agencies.

“Capitalizing on his prior experience as an international banker, Ike brings a unique, business-focused perspective to his advice,” said Doug Gibson, Covington’s chair.  “He understands clients’ businesses and the most pressing legal, compliance and policy challenges they face across the globe, and utilizes Covington’s collaborative, team-based approach to bring to bear the firm’s full range of capabilities and expertise across to help clients address these challenges. As an English-Japanese bilingual and bicultural attorney, Ike is a valuable senior advisor to our clients in Japan and plays an important role.”

Covington’s Japanese clients include leading companies in the technology, heavy machinery, automotive, and life sciences sectors as well as major trading companies and financial institutions. The firm’s work for these clients includes advice on regulatory issues including trade sanctions and controls, supply chain management, foreign direct investment, and anti-corruption and antitrust compliance; transactional matters, including M&A, licensing arrangements and collaborations; internal, Congressional and criminal investigations; and disputes in arbitration and litigation, including intellectual property and energy-related disputes. In addition, Covington regularly assists its non-Japanese clients with regulatory issues and transactional matters relating to their businesses in Japan, drawing on the firm’s strong relationships with leading Japanese law firms.
