Rani Gupta is a commercial litigator whose practice focuses on representing corporate policyholders in high-stakes insurance coverage disputes. Ms. Gupta has helped recover hundreds of millions of dollars for a wide variety of losses and under different types of insurance policies, including general liability, errors and omissions, and directors and officers policies.

  • Represented a managed care provider in $100 million insurance recovery action. Secured appellate reversal of adverse trial court ruling and subsequently obtained summary adjudication against insurers.
  • Represent oil and gas company in pursuing insurance coverage for hundreds of millions in third-party claims arising from use of insured’s product. Obtained arbitration award in client’s favor.
  • Represent mining companies in insurance coverage litigation arising from asbestos and talc lawsuits.
  • Represent a property developer in seeking insurance coverage for lawsuits arising out of the construction of a 58-story apartment tower in downtown San Francisco.
  • Represented a loan servicing company in defending against lawsuits challenging interest rates and late fee charges. Obtained dismissal of two cases and defeated certification of interest rate classes in a third case.

Pro Bono

  • Represent non-profit organizations in seeking insurance coverage for losses related to COVID-19.
  • First-chaired three-day child custody trial, resulting in fully favorable outcome for survivor of domestic violence despite adverse recommendation of court-appointed custody evaluator.
  • Briefed and argued appeal of prisoner’s civil rights claim before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
  • Advise non-profit news organizations on public records, defamation, copyright, and newsgathering issues.
