Henry Liu is a partner in the firm’s Washington office. Mr. Liu specializes in defending corporate clients in high stakes class actions involving antitrust and consumer protection claims. His practice includes clients in the financial services, consumer brands, technology, and pharmaceutical industries, among others. He has particular expertise defending clients in multidistrict litigation (MDL) and other multistate proceedings, many of which were successfully resolved through pre-trial motions. In addition to his litigation practice, Mr. Liu provides antitrust counseling on a wide range of business conduct and compliance issues, with a particular emphasis on joint ventures.
- Counsel to leading financial institutions in a variety of antitrust class actions involving U.S. Treasuries, commodities, securities lending, emerging market bonds, and bonds issued by government-sponsored enterprises.
- Counsel to a leading pharmaceutical manufacturer in a nationwide class action and two state attorneys general actions relating to the pricing of pharmaceutical products.
- Counsel to a global technology company in a variety of consumer class actions alleging deceptive practices and unfair competition claims.
- Counsel to consumer product manufacturers and retailers in a series of class actions alleging breach of warranty and deceptive practices claims.
- Counsel to a major credit card issuer in a wide variety of private class actions and state attorneys general actions involving antitrust, unfair and deceptive practices, RICO, FDCPA, FCRA, TILA, and other claims.
- Counsel to a national bank in a class action appeal in the Ninth Circuit relating to the posting order of debit-card transactions.
Pro Bono
- Briefed and argued an appeal in the Ninth Circuit on behalf of a class of Filipino teachers who accused recruitment companies of demanding they pay massive processing and placement fees. The Ninth Circuit affirmed the jury’s $4.5 million award to the class. See Tanedo v. Universal Placement International (9th Cir. 2015).
- Briefed and argued a federal habeas appeal before the Third Circuit on behalf of an inmate who had been incarcerated for over twenty years. The Third Circuit granted habeas relief and instructed that the inmate be released. See Alongi v. Ricci et. al (3d. Cir. 2010).
- Lead trial counsel for several indigent defendants in criminal proceedings in the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County.
- Represented a major civil rights organization and individual plaintiffs in various public accommodations lawsuits alleging race discrimination.
